LawWare – New members of staff - June 2008

LawWare are delighted to welcome 2 new members of staff to further bolster our capabilities:-

Paul Smith joined as the latest member of the Development Team. PaulS says – I recently graduated from Heriot Watt University with a Master of Science degree with Distinction. Prior to that I worked for nine years on medical, pharmaceutical and large financial systems. My hobbies include art and music. I have spent most of my time to date doing Electronic Data Transfers and look forward to learning more about LawWare.

Paul McRobb has joined the Sales Department and will be assisting Simon Greig with Clients and Prospects. PaulM says - I have joined LawWare after achieving an Honours degree in e-business from Napier University. Previously from a corporate sales background I have spent the last 4 years learning how the application of e-business practices to business enterprises can facilitate the reduction of product and service cost, along with the improvement of customer response time and quality. I am very enthusiastic about joining LawWare and keen to develop these skills further within the legal marketplace.

LawWare the pace of change - May 2008

Commentary by Warren Wander (Managing Director)
“The pace of change in the IT world never ceases to amaze me".

Moore’s law” describes an important trend in Hardware suggesting the level of computing power doubles approximately every 2 years, whilst the cost of purchasing this technology reduces considerably.

The advent of ever more powerful equipment forms a platform for increasingly more sophisticated software such as Windows Vista and Office 2007 (and LawWare Enterprise) and keeping up with these rapid changes is a challenge that we are used to.

With the pace of change in today’s business world and the levels of risk management, the need to access information quickly and comprehensively is increasingly vital, hence the development of the new LawWare Portal Page and the enhancements to the LawWare KPI Notifications.

To facilitate our ability to develop and deliver an ever evolving product as rich as LawWare Enterprise, I am delighted to welcome on board Paul Smith & Paul McRobb who both joined the team at the beginning of the year.

Here’s to meeting the challenge of the exciting times ahead for us all.”

LawWare User Group Conference - November 2007

Wow, what a blast that was! Nearly 60 delegates attended. This was the first time we had been ‘out of the office’ for many years and the Dunblane Hydro proved to be a brilliant venue. We had a number of speakers in the morning –

Warren Wander (MD - LawWare Ltd) welcomed everyone and introduced the agenda for the day. Starting with a variety of independent speakers and experts in their fields.

Calum Henderson (Henderson & Co) brought to life the keyboard shortcuts in Windows and showed a whole host of useful tips and tricks including how to make your PC go as quickly as it did on the first day it arrived.

Brian O’Neill (The Styles Bank) proved that with a bit of software magic in MS Word he can produce a whole set of styles that are ready to run and completely up-to-date for your Conveyancing delight (and he is working on Court and Executry styles).

Robyn Lowe (Blair Cadell) showed how she uses the case management aspects of LawWare Enterprise to make her work life easier. We are especially grateful to Robyn - although she is not an experienced speaker her knowledge and enthusiasm shone through and she makes LawWare Enterprise sing and dance.

Garry Dawson (VoiceText) took talking at your PC to a whole new level. He demonstrated how speech recognition has really matured and is now a fast useable tool for those that cannot type.

After a super lunch, we hit the ground running with an interactive session that had the group split into 7 teams and brainstorming; then presenting their findings to the other teams and afterwards everyone voted for a winner. For the record; the winning team comprised - Alastair Hart, Colin Ferguson, Paul Ogilvie, Ian Johnstone, Garry Dawson, Stuart McKay and John Hobkirk (a finer body of men you couldn’t find).

There were also some LawWare awards/prize-winners in the categories of; Super-User of the Year – Robyn Lowe (Blair Cadell), Partner of the Year – Nicholas Scullion (N J Scullion) and also Cashier of the Year - Christine Fordyce (Cowan & Co). Congratulations to them; we hope to feature them in further articles.

The important thing is what the delegates thought and these were some comments -

"We really enjoyed the conference and learning from other users and speakers" Nicholas Scullion

"Yet again another informative meeting" Shirley Green

"A quick note to say thank you for a great day yesterday. Lots of good ideas and good company." Christine Fordyce

"Many thanks for an excellent day. Both Linda and I felt we learnt a great deal, and also enjoyed ourselves." Ian Rodger

"I thoroughly enjoyed today's event, the range of speakers and time allocated was spot on." Stuart McKay

"Enjoyed the event and found it stimulating." Glenn Millar

LawWare and Millar & Bryce deliver OnLine interface - May 2007

LawWare and Millar & Bryce are delighted to announce the immediate availability of LawWare’s new File Online facility that passes common client and practice information between LawWare’s Enterprise practice & matter management system and Millar & Bryce’s MBOnLine search request system.

This is the first delivery of this kind of Internet-based System to System Interface (ISSI), where information held in LawWare Enterprise is now passed to MBOnLine with a single mouse click; immediately dispensing with the need to manually fill in those fields within MBOnLine with the same information that an operator has already entered into their LawWare Enterprise system.

Warren Wander, Managing Director of LawWare Ltd, says “this is a great example of how two leading service providers can co-operate in a truly useful fashion for the benefit of law firm staff and clients - by supporting the passing of common data between complimentary systems. Working with Millar & Bryce has been easy and I am delighted that Millar & Bryce selected LawWare as an early partner, and the fact that LawWare are the very first software supplier to deliver this to Scottish law firms is testament to our good design; we created Enterprise to be Internet-enabled and now we can prove that it is.”

David Nicoll, Managing Director of Millar & Bryce Ltd says “An increasing number of firms are realising the benefits of case management software. Millar & Bryce are delighted to be working with LawWare to satisfy the need for integrated systems. LawWare has developed a very efficient interface to enable seamless flow of information between LawWare Enterprise and MBOnLine.”

Simon Greig, Sales Manager at LawWare comments, “The seminar programme that we commenced at the beginning of this year is entitled ‘2007 – Going On-line’ as we recognised that 2007 would be a landmark year in bringing practitioners and IT much closer together via the influence of the Internet and I am thrilled that this is now a reality. I am also excited by the plans to develop the Enterprise - MBOnLine link still further in order to deliver even more unique advantages for our mutual clients.

LawWare delivers in Inverness - March 2007

In September last year LawWare and Inverness-based firm South Forrest entered into an agreement for the supply a new cash accounting and management reporting system. This has now been successfully completed.

South Forrest is a long established 7 Partner firm providing general legal services over all areas, excluding criminal work.

This was one of those ‘slightly more complex’ contracts than the norm. South Forrest were using an English system and the Partners vividly recalled the previous changeover as ‘very stressful’, so there was some trepidation involved. However with the assistance of long time legal expert Harry Usher, LawWare were able to extract and convert the data without difficulty. The software and converted data were installed on South Forrest’s server in November and LawWare Training Manager, Melissa Blackwood, spent a few days on site assisting and training staff.

Indeed, Joint Cashroom Partner – Alan McDonald says “the previous experience of changing was very stressful, however in the event it went so smoothly that the staff quickly expressed their satisfaction in the use and confidence in the system. I am particularly impressed that it integrates with MS Word as this makes the Reporting and Cash Accounts significantly easier for all concerned.”

Simon Greig, Sales Manager at LawWare comments, “Right from the outset South Forrest knew exactly what they wanted and investigated a number of possible alternative systems. We were able to demonstrate how both LawWare Classic and LawWare Enterprise would meet their requirements. In the end, South Forrest preferred LawWare Enterprise and it is very pleasing to hear that our new client is pleased with their new system and the service that goes with it. We try hard as a team to make the process as smooth and painless as possible by understanding our client’s requirements, setting the right level of expectations and delivering these. The LawWare team have done a great job in initially implementing and now supporting South Forrest. South Forrest’s focussed approach has rewarded them with confident staff that have a positive attitude towards IT, which will encourage them to look to achieve more from their system in the future”.

We will leave the last word to IT Partner Martin Smith when asked to sum up the relationship with LawWare, “It’s very good; LawWare’s staff are friendly and there is a mutual goodwill to continue to develop the system”.

LawWare Adds new dimension to Fee Earner Support - February 2007

LawWare Ltd is pleased to announce a new business partnership with FWBS Ltd. Both companies’ flagship software products - LawWare Enterprise and FWBS’ OMS Matter Centre - have been integrated to provide Scottish law firms with unprecedented levels of Fee Earner support together with Cashroom financials and compliance.

In many organisations today, client and transaction related information is typically scattered throughout a firm, forcing the professionals to painstakingly activate multiple, disconnected applications: tracking down emails in Microsoft Outlook, finding files in their document management systems, locating finance data in billing systems, and viewing deadlines & activities in a myriad of disconnected systems. FWBS OMS Matter Centre overcomes these challenges by providing professionals and their support staff with a comprehensive view of their clients, jobs, and workloads. This central approach supports how professionals actually work by contextually organising tasks and information around work items, letting them easily view, share, manage, and act on information, seamlessly immersed inside the familiarity of Microsoft Office.

LawWare’s Enterprise software is providing compliance and financial support in large long established yet forwarding thinking firms like James & George Collie, as well as the new breed of nimble, niche players like Macrae Flett & Rennie. Combining Enterprise with OMS Matter Centre means both of these firms have a powerful best of breed solution. Warren Wander, Managing Director, says “this has been an exciting development and working with FWBS has been very easy, the result is a fantastic solution that will appeal to firms that understand how to use IT to drive their businesses forward”

New - Notification Alerts of KPI's - October 2006

LawWare Ltd are pleased to announce the immediate availability of our new staff alerts software. This comprises a wealth of business criteria that a member of staff can select for the LawWare Enterprise system to automatically monitor itself on his or her behalf, and advise them of the status of this monitoring on a daily (or more frequent) basis.

“The idea of this automatic monitoring service came from our client base” says Warren Wander (Managing Director). “Initially we were getting requests from different clients for reports and enquiry screens that they could use to check particular items (what we have termed as Key Performance Indicators or KPI’s). We realised that these were all variants of common themes and that we could put these altogether in a configurable fashion and let various members of staff choose what they wanted Enterprise to monitor for them. The result is amazingly simple – yet astonishingly powerful, whether you are Managing Partner, Practice Manager, Secretary or Cashier – there is something for everyone. The result is that Enterprise genuinely supports staff in their need to be informed about the KPI’s that affect them, without having to trawl the system themselves looking at various Enquiry Screens and running any number of Reports”.

Enterprise can automatically monitor any number of the 40 KPI’s that it has been programmed with and each staff member selects those that they want to be informed about. They can also select the Warning and Critical thresholds that they want Enterprise to apply. Partners and Managers can set KPI’s that monitor either the Firm-wide position, or members of their team or themselves only.

Partners and Staff can be confident that as soon as a threshold or trigger is breached that they will be alerted to this immediately. After all an issue nipped in the bud, is far easier to deal with than one not picked up until several weeks later.

Firms can be confident that exposure to risk is dramatically reduced.

The firm’s clients can just be confident.

The best news of all is that LawWare are delivering Notification Alerts as a standard part of Enterprise. So all new users will get it included and all existing Enterprise users will get it included in their next upgrade.

LawWare delivers in Dumfries & Galloway - August 2006

In April this year LawWare and Annan-based firm Harper Robertson & Shannon entered into an agreement for the supply a new practice management system. This has now been successfully completed.

At the outset this was a slightly more complex contract than usual. Harper Robertson & Shannon were using an English system from AIM and this represented a technical challenge when it came to the electronic conversion of the existing data. However with the assistance of long time legal expert Harry Usher, LawWare were able to extract and convert the data without too much difficulty. The software and converted data were installed on Harper Robertson & Shannon’s Server in June and LawWare Training Manager, Melissa Blackwood spent a couple of days on site assisting and training staff.

Melissa’s background is in cashrooms, having worked previously at Drummond Miller and Brodies, and this was put to good effect as Janet Priestley, Cashier at Harper Robertson & Shannon takes up. “The change over from AIM to LawWare was completed with very little disruption. We found 2 days training adequate and find the system simple to use. Overall we are happy with the new system and have found very few teething problems”.

Indeed, Partner - Alan Robertson also says “The clarity of the reports simplifies analysis. Posting information is much easier and quicker. To me its not rocket science, we just like it and non-technical people like me can get the hang of it - that said I haven't got a clue how it all works so its good to see that the support service is A1”.

Simon Greig, Sales Manager at LawWare comments, “At the end of the day it’s gratifying that our clients are pleased to state that they are happy with their new system. We try hard to make the process as smooth and painless as possible by understanding our client’s requirements, setting the right level of expectations and delivering these. We have done a good job at Harper Robertson & Shannon and this gives them confidence and engenders a positive attitude towards IT, which will encourage them to look to achieve more from their system in the future”.

We will leave the last word to Janet, “we are happy to recommend LawWare to other solicitors”.

User Group Meeting, Edinburgh - June 2006

The LawWare User group meeting was held on 13th June within our offices in central Edinburgh. We were pleased to welcome over 30 delegates from 24 Firms.

There were two parts to the meeting – in the morning LawWare provided updates regarding what had developed since the last meeting and where we are today. In the afternoon there was a User Forum that raised and discussed a variety of issues.

LawWare Today –

Warren Wander kicked off the day by welcoming everyone and outlining the agenda. He introduced everyone to the LawWare Team (Scott Beard, Melissa Blackwood and Simon Greig) and then Simon Greig introduced the new Client Reward Scheme. This scheme is designed to reward our clients for their assistance in recommending LawWare and supporting our aim of spreading the good word, if you would like more details please let us know. Warren then returned to review the current state of LawWare Enterprise from the cashroom perspective.

After a short break, Simon returned to preview our thinking behind the current development effort of the Fee Earner productivity tools in Enterprise and Warren provided a hands-on demonstration of these. Warren continued afterwards with an update from the LawWare Support Desk

User Forum –

The User Forum was led by the User Group Chairman - Alastair Hart, who invited Warren to stay with the delegates and participate in the discussions. These were wide-ranging and there isn’t enough space here to do any justice to them, we did take some notes and these have been issued to all delegates, if you would like a copy please let us know.

Enterprise takes aim in Dumfries & Galloway - April 2006

Harper Robertson & Shannon, Solicitors and Estate Agents, and LawWare Ltd are delighted to announce an agreement to migrate Harper Robertson & Shannon’s practice management system from AIM Evolution Client/Server to LawWare Enterprise Edition. Harper Robertson & Shannon are located in Annan and serve a widespread community based in Southern Dumfries and Galloway.

Alan Robertson, Partner, describes the firm as "a small country firm catering for the legal needs of a rural community". We fit into the category of ‘family lawyers’ who deal with a wide range of legal business. We have been updating our IT infrastructure over the course of the last year and we wanted a software solution that would assist the Partners and Cashroom staff to streamline our accounting and compliance processes, improve control and speed the flow of information. LawWare Enterprise achieves all of these and more, and we are looking forward to working with Warren and his team.”

Harper Robertson & Shannon have been running AIM’s Evolution Client/Server software for a number of years. LawWare has had considerable success in the south west of Scotland and much of this is based on the robust nature of our software and its comprehensive compliance with the rules and regulations of the Law Society of Scotland.”

LawWare Express to Tayside - March 2006

Dundee firm – The Chamber Practice – have embarked on a new level of accounting and compliance control. When the firm’s Principal, Scott Campbell, formed the conveyancing and estate agency firm he decided to commence with a manual system, until the volumes of business dictated that a computerised system would be required. Once The Chamber Practice hit this stage it was to LawWare that they turned for a solution that would assist the step up to improved control.

Scott takes up the story, “Having got to the stage where my Cashier needed the support of a cash accounting package I spoke to other firms in the town. I had good reports about LawWare and approached them. We decided to buy a new PC at the same time and LawWare was up and running very quickly and we went Live on the first day the LawWare trainer visited us. The software is good and my Cashier is enjoying it. I am happy with my investment and the back-up and support is good also”.

LawWare’s Managing Director – Warren Wander – is happy that the choice of solutions that LawWare offers to firms means it is easy to respond when a customer knows exactly what they require. “Scott was very clear about his requirement and we were able to quickly explain why LawWare Express was the system to go with. Our Training Manager, Melissa Blackwood, was able to rapidly organise the training and data take-on with the Cashier at The Chamber Practice as we have a lot of experience and understanding of the needs of the smaller firm, and in the process of moving from a manual system to a computerised one. Melissa’s previous experience working in two Edinburgh firms Cashrooms means she communicates very effectively at the Cashier level and brings the highest level of knowledge and, just as importantly, confidence to the implementation project”.

In conclusion Warren adds “We are very happy to be supporting The Chamber Practice and we look forward to a long association with Scott and his team”.

New Web Site launched - March 2006

After a long time in gestation LawWare’s brand new website is launched. Having undergone a complete re-design and been re-written from scratch this fresh and modern site brings a new level of finesse and elegance to what can often be a lacklustre experience for the Internet surfer.

www.lawware.co.uk has information about LawWare Ltd, Software products, Support services as well as News and User Downloads. LawWare’s Managing Director, Warren Wander, commented “it’s been a while coming but now that it’s here I am sure you will find it worth the wait. We have tried hard to cover all the basics in this initial release of the Site and welcome comments and feedback from customers and other contacts alike”.

New Win – LawWare Express - January 2006

A brand new firm has set-up shop in Eyemouth. Previously the branch office of another firm - the enterprising duo of William Muir and Derek Devine have formed the firm of Wood & Muir. As the only firm in the Borders fishing town they will serve a picturesque area including Coldingham, St Abbs, Ayton, Burnmouth and Chirnside helping local people and companies with all aspects associated with general chamber work.

Wood & Muir have selected LawWare Express to begin recording their accounts and monitoring their compliance with the Law Society of Scotland rules and regulations.

Merger News – LawWare Enterprise - November 2005

New St Andrew’s firm Murray Donald Drummond Cook have selected LawWare Enterprise as the new firm’s Practice Management system. The new practice was formed at the end of 2005 by the merger of two of North-East Fife’s most prominent firms – Murray Donald & Caithness and Drummond Cook & Macintosh.

This conjoining creates a veritable powerhouse of knowledge and capability unprecedented in East Fife and the Partners are determined to mix modern technology with their traditional principles to offer business and personal clients new levels of legal expertise and client care.

What’s going on ……… in Orkney - October 2005

Over the course of last year we seemed to attract a high proportion of Orcadian firms onboard. We welcomed Nicolsons, J E P Robertson & Son and The Herd Practice, who are all now processing away on their LawWare Classic systems.

This brings our number up to an astonishing 5 out of the 6 firms on the island and LawWare Managing Director Warren Wander says “we are very proud that the outstanding stability and reliability of LawWare means that these geographically remote firms can readily access our modern system. Similarly the widespread take up of Broadband Internet, coupled with our Remote Support services, allows our helpdesk to support the users desktops as easily in Kirkwall and Stromness - as in Edinburgh and Glasgow”.

Despite his name Warren isn’t often to be found wandering the numerous islands that form this northern archipelago laptop in hand, because LawWare can demonstrate their software directly to anyone who has an Internet connection and a telephone – no matter where they are, or which island they are on.
